Interpreting
Simultaneous translation is a true technical feat! Here are some crucial aspects:
Equipment: Interpreters use headphones, microphones, and soundproof booths. This setup ensures they can hear clearly and speak without external interruptions.
Mental Speed: The interpreter needs to process information almost instantaneously. This requires tremendous mental agility to capture and translate simultaneously.
Voice Control: The voice must be clear and consistent. Maintaining a stable tone of voice while translating is essential for the audience to understand perfectly.
Focus and Concentration: There can be no distractions. The interpreter must be fully focused to capture nuances and details of the original speech.
Mastery of Terminology: Deep knowledge of the specific vocabulary for each area is vital. Interpreters often conduct prior research on the event’s topic to ensure accuracy.
This technique relies on the translator’s skill in listening and reproducing content in a new language.
However, with the emergence of simultaneous interpretation and technological progress, the use of consecutive interpretation has declined. Although it remains applicable in certain contexts, its effectiveness may be limited by interruptions in the dialogue flow and the pressure to keep participants engaged during pauses.
Furthermore, the slower nature of this technique might not be ideal for events with tight schedules.
Large international conferences often feature simultaneous translation, but this service spans a variety of events.
From business meetings and factory inspections to academic seminars, international fairs, corporate training sessions, cultural and artistic events, and governmental or diplomatic sessions—wherever there’s a need for in-person communication among different language speakers.
As with various fields, the pandemic hastened the integration of remote simultaneous translation, crucial for global communication during times of social distancing.
The resulting legacy includes:
. greater accessibility and inclusion, reaching a broader audience without geographical limits
. savings on time and resources for companies, speakers, and instructors don’t always need to travel
. advanced platforms ensuring seamless and integrated experiences for all participants
. enhanced sustainability through less travel, which reduces the carbon footprint

Subtitling
Who says work can’t be entertaining? Subtitling is both a challenge and a delight. It’s hard not to get caught up in the storyline, and along the way, we often end up biting our nails to find out the ending.
Translating and ‘binge-watching’
You know when you start watching a series and you immediately want tobinge-watch it? Well, me too! Except I want to binge-translate.
Unfortunately, for us, that’s not possible due to several reasons: the episode’s deliverydeadline, availability of future chapters, other pending tasks…
Nevertheless,at each episode, we immerse ourselves in the narrative, anxiously waiting for the finale!
In 25 years of subtitling experience, I have translated over 2,500 titles, including both feature films and series episodes. My work with leading studios and networks allowed me to ride the cable TV boom in Brazil, followed by the DVD surge, and currently, the major streaming services.
The Boom of Cable TV in Brazil
The 1990s cable TV boom in Brazil not only revolutionized the media market but also intensified the need for translated foreign content, profoundly impacting the translation industry.
Movies, series, documentaries, and variety shows from all over the globe began flooding Brazilian screens.
Ever thought about the crucial role translators play in allowing the audience to enjoy this content in their native language?
If you’re a fan of movies and such, and you rely on subtitles to keep up with the dialogue, chances are you’ve seen my work on TV or in the cinema. Just check the credits at the end to find out!
Confidentiality in translation?
When cable TV emerged, most of the material needing subtitles was old, having already been presented in cinemas or on open TV channels. At that time, each outlet handled its own translation process.
Interestingly, in my 25 years of experience translating films and series, I have only ONCE translated the same film for two different clients.
However, today the content is 100% new since streaming movies and series are entirely original productions.
Naturally, nowadays confidentiality has become a vital element of our work.
There are a variety of titles showcasing my work available on leading streaming platforms.
Bio
a translator is born
My first challenge involving two different languages in a real-life communication setting happened in an exchange student program in the United States, where I spent a year. Seeds planted then yielded results not too distant from that time.
education and experience
Back to Brazil, I earned my degree from the University of São Paulo’s Psychology Institute, and worked as a Psychologist in a private practice for a few years. Eventually, I felt the urge to enhance my experience abroad and went back to the US, where I spent an additional seven years.
developing the craft
I then had the chance to immerse myself in translation and specialize in subtitling, providing services for HBO, Netflix, Fox, Sony, Warner, DVDs, and several other film and television networks.
advanced training
Upon returning to my homeland, in 2001, I came across simultaneous interpretation – and it was love at first sight. I enrolled in the Sequential Course for English Language Interpreters, at PUC-SP, and took other Advanced Practice Classes on Interpreting at Unibero.
advanced studies
Ever since, I have embraced the challenges of simultaneous interpretation, collaborating with a skilled team to offer exceptional services to clients.
expertise
I have had the opportunity to engage in a variety of events across different sectors and settings: major conferences, private business meetings, visits to manufacturing sites, doctoral course lectures, training programs, diplomatic missions, online broadcasts, earnings calls, and press briefings…
The diversity of contexts, themes, and individuals I engage with makes my passion for this profession renew itself daily.
